Becoming a General Practice Nurse

General practice nurses are fundamental in the efficient running of a GP surgery. The responsibilities of a general practice nurse can range from providing travel advice and immunisations, sexual health services and obtaining blood samples among many more.

To be a general practice nurse, you must have undertaken a nursing degree and be a qualified and registered adult, child, mental health or learning disability nurse.

General practice nurses can start on apprenticeships as healthcare assistants and work in a GP surgery whilst being supported to become a qualified nurse. To find out more information about studying to become a nurse please click here.

Student Nurse Placements

A nursing degree involves work placements in NHS settings, including the choice to experience a placement in a GP Surgery.

GP Surgeries in Greater Peterborough are excited to welcome nursing students as it gives them the chance to showcase what a rewarding job being a General Practice nurse can be. By experiencing life in a GP surgery, working as part of a tight knit team, with competitive pay, flexible working and the opportunity to develop specialist areas of interest we hope to see more newly qualified nurses choosing a career in General Practice.
