Entry Level Healthcare Assistant Pathways

Health Care Assistants (HCAs) work with doctors, nurses and other healthcare professionals, as well as having lots of contact with patients.

In a GP surgery, as a HCA you might:

  • Sterilise equipment
  • Carry out health checks
  • Restock consulting rooms when necessary
  • Process lab samples
  • Take blood samples
  • Carry out health promotion or health education work

There are no set entry requirements to become a healthcare assisant however employers do expect good literacy and numeracy. HCAs need to hold a care certificate but GP Surgeries might employ candidates with no previous experience and support them through the care certificate. For more information on the care certificate, please click here.

Many HCAs often go on to undertake a Level 3 Health Care Support Worker Qualification, which gives them the opportunity to progress into a career in nursing.
